Gulf of Georgia Cannery Historic Site One of the few remaining salmon canneries currently standing in British Columbia from the 1800's, this national historic site is home to a museum located on the banks of the Fraser River in the fishing village of Steveston, located in the community of Richmond, British Columbia.
The cannery was the second longest running cannery along the Fraser River (1894-1979), after the Imperial Cannery. Built and restored between 1894 and 1964, the cannery was closed in 1979, bought by the Federal Government five years later and is now owned by Parks Canada. Currently operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, the cannery was registered as a national heritage site in 1976.
A landmark for fishermen, the cannery is currently a series of wooden and heavy timber structures comprised of the main cannery building, the icehouse, and the vitamin oil shed. The museum also features an artifact display of approximately 10,000 objects related to the industry and cannery machinery dating back from the 1900's.
Guided tours, a short film and a 50-seat Boiler House Theatre that displays four huge boilers for steam power used in production are some of the daily attractions. Visitors have been learning about the west coast fishing industry and the important role that women and immigrants played in the canneries' development since the site was opened to the public in 1994.
